A large study of nearly 16,000 adults found no link between eating animal protein and higher death risk. Surprisingly, higher animal protein intake was associated with lower cancer mortality, supporting its role in a balanced, health-promoting diet.

A higher intake of cruciferous vegetables may be associated with a lower risk for colon cancer, a meta-analysis of 17 studies shows.

A large North American cohort study found that vegetarian diets were linked to lower risks of several cancers, including colorectal, stomach, breast, prostate, and lymphoproliferative cancers. No evidence suggested that vegetarian eating increased cancer risk for any site.

Researchers at the Leibniz Institute of Vegetable and Ornamental Crops (IGZ) investigated the factors that regulate seasonal variation in the nutritional quality of red cabbage. They analyzed the influence of light and temperature on the formation of cancer-preventive and anti-inflammatory compounds in simulations of summer and autumn cultivation. The results show that the nutritional value of red cabbage can be enhanced through targeted cultivation strategies.

Yang Yong-jin, a researcher of traditional Jeju cuisine, died Monday. He was 60. Yang’s surviving family told The Korea Times that he died of cancer at Jeju National University Hospital. Born in Jeju in 1965, Yang was the son of Kim Ji-soon, who was recognized in 2010 as the island’s first master of traditional Jeju cuisine. He graduated from Ohyeon High School and went on to study architecture at Jeju College of Technology. After working in performance planning, Yang opened a baking school in 1996. A 2000 trip to Italy introduced him to the slow food movement, which emphasizes traditional food culture and local ingredients. Inspired, he later founded the Institute for Preservation of Jeju's Traditional Local Food. Yang learned to cook traditional Jeju dishes such as bracken and beef soup (gosari yukgaejang), gulfweed and pork soup (momguk), pork cartilage soup (jeopjjak-bbone-guk) and glutinous rice cakes (omegitteok) from his mother. Jeju’s cuisine, shaped by the island’s isolation

There is strong evidence that there is “no safe amount” of processed meat to eat, nutrition experts say in response to a new study on the connection between diet and the risk of major diseases, including cancer, type 2 diabetes and heart disease. The researchers also found elevated risks from the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages … The post There is no safe amount of processed meat to eat, according to new research appeared first on Egypt Independent.

The Adventist Health Study found that patients who were vegetarians had a lower risk of medium-frequency cancers.

A cup and a half of leafy green vegetables could go a long way to addressing atherosclerotic vascular diseases (ASVD's), new research from Edith Cowan University (ECU), the University of Western Australia and the Danish Cancer Institute has found.

A global analysis using 30+ years of data reveals a sharp rise in breast cancer deaths and disability among women aged 25–45 linked to high unprocessed red meat consumption. The study highlights striking disparities by region and socioeconomic status, calling for urgent dietary and public health action.

This study challenged the belief that white meat is healthier than red meat, showing that eating over 300 g of poultry weekly may double the risk for death from GI cancers compared with low consumption.

A new analysis from Italian cohort studies found that consuming over 300 g of poultry per week is linked to significantly increased risk of death from gastrointestinal cancers, especially in men. Moderate meat intake, particularly red meat in controlled quantities, was paradoxically associated with reduced all-cause mortality.

This research protocol systematically reviews existing studies on red and processed meat consumption and cancer risk, assessing their credibility and consistency to provide a clearer understanding of potential health impacts.

Scientists confirm fruits and vegetables reduce diabetes, heart disease risk, but highlight urgent need for clarity on cancer protection mechanisms. Sustainable water practices and targeted policy actions are crucial for wider adoption.

Sand and dust storms are weather events that occur in dry areas. These massive clouds of small particles and rocks move across the land when very strong winds pick them up. They can cover a city with a thin layer of sand or dust in minutes, as in a post-apocalyptical scene from the movie "Dune." It's a highly visual phenomenon, as a sand storm can form walls of dust that stretch for miles and reach several thousand feet high. Actually, on any given day, about 44 billion pounds (20 teragrams) of dust are floating in Earth's atmosphere. But how does it all start? And what triggers this nebula-like event? Causes and Traveling Processes These storms start when strong winds, often coming from thunderstorms, lift loose soil from dry, flat regions with little vegetation. Dry areas like deserts are the main source. For example, most sand storms happen

Against the backdrop of an alarming increase in the number of people under 50 being diagnosed with bowel cancer, researchers are urging people to bump up their fiber intake and improve their eating habits if they want to reduce their risk of deadly digestive cancers. Two recent studies expand on existing evidence that a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, legumes and dairy may protect against the risk of gastrointestinal (GI) cancers -- including bowel -- and improve the outcomes of these diseases.

arXiv:2409.11187v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Background: Allium vegetables (garlic and onion) are one of the flavorings in people's daily diets. Observational studies suggest that intake of allium vegetables may be correlated with a lower incidence of digestive system cancers. However, the existence of a causal relationship is still controversial due to confounding factors and reverse causation. Therefore, we explored the causal relationship between intake of allium vegetables and digestive system cancers using Mendelian randomization approach. Methods: First, we performed Mendelian randomization analyses using inverse variance weighting (IVW), weighted median, and MR-Egger approaches, and demonstrated the reliability of the results in the sensitivity step. Second, Multivariable Mendelian randomization was applied to adjust for smoking and alcohol consumption. Third, we explored the molecular mechanisms behind the positive results through network pharmacology and molecular docking

Remember when your parents used to say, "Eat your greens, they are good for you"? Well, they were really onto something. Several studies have shown that higher intakes of cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, one of the most widely consumed vegetables in the United States, are associated with reduced risks of diseases such as diabetes and cancer, thanks to their organosulfur compounds, such as glucosinolates and isothiocyanates that exhibit a broad spectrum of bioactivities including antioxidant activity. However, few studies have focused on the endogenous content of polysulfide in broccoli sprouts.

After an improvement of Toronto’s air quality, smoke drifting from raging forest fires is expected to envelop the city ahead of the Canada Day long weekend. Air quality to worsen from low to moderate risk Smoke plumes, sweeping from raging forest fires in Northeastern Ontario and Quebec, are forecasted to continue masking Toronto into Thursday night, deteriorating the city’s air quality for the second consecutive day this week. Environment Canada is projecting poor air quality levels to last into Friday night, soaring from level 2 or low risk on Thursday morning to level 4 or moderate risk by Thursday night, and further dropping to level 5 out of 10 throughout Friday. The federal agency said the air pollution intensity might vary by the hour and location across the city, with visibility at times being obstructed. High levels of air pollution are also expected to reach other parts of the GTA region. Special air quality statements were issued for southern

Toronto had some of the world’s worst air quality on Wednesday, according to global air quality tracker IQAir, as smoke from forest fires over northeastern Ontario and Quebec moved into the city. Toronto had already placed among the world’s worst for air quality earlier this month, but it eventually fell off the top spot. IQAir ranked Toronto as fourth in the world for poor air quality on Wednesday morning, following Dubai in the No. 1 spot, as well as Detroit and Chicago in the second and third spots, just some of the U.S. cities that are contending with smoke from Canadian wildfires. Canadian wildfire smoke even crossed the Atlantic, according to Europe’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service, with most of the smoke reaching western Europe on Monday and predicted to continue further east until Thursday. Environment Canada issued a statement saying Toronto’s conditions were expected to improve for some areas on Thursday night. Wildfire
